Amy Hughes is very familiar with the local Jam Band
scene. After all she is the front woman for Columbus'
Screamin Peach. And she performs with Ekoostik
Hookah, Groovestone Fusion, among others. And last
June she sang with Jay Laboy on a cruise ship. She
understands how hard it is for this genre to just get
exposure.
That's why the first thing you'll see when you go to her
Facebook page, Afternoons with Deuce, is "Come join
me, Deuce, every Tuesday from 11 am to 1 pm EST
for great music from unsigned artists that I enjoy and
friends I want to help promote". When I asked her
about that she replied " The Jam Band scene has little
opportunity to be heard. For instance Billy Zenn who
has been in the scene for twenty years and a great,
talented band but is still just under the radar". Even
though she is more involved in the jam band scene she
is open to all kinds of music.
Amy scored her spot on Underground Columbus as a
student of Ohio Center of Broadcasting. The online
radio broadcast features original songs by unsigned
artists from across the country. She told me "I've been
struggling with a career. The rock star dream wasn't
really working out. Radio gives me the chance to stay
connected and still be entertaining."
Underground Columbus is looking for original music
from unsigned artists of all genres. To submit your
music go to the home page at
http://www.undergroundcolumbus.com and click the
Submit your Music button. Amy says "I wanted to be
able to offer the opportunity to promote the music of
my friends" . So far Amy has featured bands like Billy
Zenn, The Andy Shaw Band, Groovestone Fusion,
Waterband, Donna Magavero, and Clear Conscious
from San Francisco, California. She would like to see
her friends in Ekoostik Hookah, a well loved local band
who have also been around for twenty years, put out
another album she could share. She also mentioned
that she is particularly interested in artist Megan Burtt
"I absolutely love her stuff."
After your song has been approved by the
management, it will go to the appropriate DJ. "If I think
your'e great I will get you on the air. I'll tell the audience
who you are and where you are going to be playing. So
it is beneficial for both me and the bands."
The site also offers information on local places for
bands looking for venues. Amy advises "Scarlet and
Grey is a great place to get started."
I recommend checking out what they call The OCB
Sessions, a chance to perform a set which they edit
into a video for you. The site says "In the past we've
hosted sessions with Earwig, the Miss Molly Band, the
Smith Brothers, Joey Hebdo,
the Andy Shaw Band, Timid Blue, Matt Monta and The
Hot Coal Band,Twenty One Pilots, Alex White... lots of
local artists."
So check out the site, enter your original stuff and be
heard!
