Skin Deep is concealed in Scarborough Plaza off
Scarborough Road in Columbus, Ohio. Despite much
backtracking—due to a confused MapQuest—I found
myself walking through the shop doors, a sharp ping
announcing my presence to Gabriel Mendez, one of
the shop’s two tattoo artists.

The shop consisted of a lobby, three tattooing rooms
and an office. The rooms were built by the owner—
Lucky—when he first leased the shop.

At the age of 18, Lucky learned to tattoo from a friend
and a machine constructed from a cassette player.
He stopped shortly after, believing the industry to be
unprofitable.

Several years ago he bought a few professional
machines and began practicing on friends. A year later,
Skin Deep opened.

Lucky and the shop run on three principles: Education,
Sterility, and Finished Product. They insure that their
clients know precisely what they’re getting themselves
into, including preparation for long sessions, aftercare,
procedures, and sterility. They take great care when it
comes to the cleanliness of the shop. Lastly, they pride
themselves in delivering quality tattoos to their clients.

Skin Deep has a sister shop called Twisted Fate
located in Lancaster, Ohio. Skin Deep is looking to
relocate near campus within the next several months.
